A separate guest Wi-Fi name is useful, but a name alone does not prove isolation. The design needs an appropriate network, traffic rules, and tests showing what guests can and cannot reach.
Define the access guests need
Most visitors need internet access rather than company file shares, printers, camera systems, or management interfaces. Decide whether access should expire, whether a portal is appropriate, and whether individual guest devices should communicate with each other. Conference-room casting or printing may require a narrowly defined exception.
Check the full path
Your administrator should verify the guest SSID's network assignment, switch uplinks, address allocation, and gateway rules. An SSID assigned to a VLAN still depends on that VLAN reaching the gateway correctly. Client isolation and network isolation solve different problems and should be tested separately.
Validate with a guest device
- Confirm a guest can obtain an address and browse an approved public site.
- Confirm protected internal resources are inaccessible.
- Test approved exceptions, if any.
- Check bandwidth controls during realistic use.
- Confirm a guest cannot reach network administration interfaces.
Maintain the arrangement
Document who distributes guest access, how it expires, and who approves exceptions. A public-facing portal may also need reviewed privacy wording. Do not reuse an administrator or staff password for visitors. Recheck isolation when network equipment, VLANs, or firewall rules change.
