Power over Ethernet can supply data and power through compatible cabling and equipment. A device that will not start may have a power, cable, port, compatibility, or hardware problem. A device that powers on but remains unreachable may have a separate network problem.
Start with observations
Record the device model, switch or injector model, port, indicator lights, and the last known working time. Check whether one device is affected or several devices on the same switch. Look for a recent equipment change or a new PoE load.
Ask the administrator to verify
- The device's required PoE standard and supported power source.
- Whether PoE is enabled on the intended switch port.
- The port's power limit and the switch's total available budget.
- Cable condition, termination, and the supported installation length.
- Port logs, link status, and any repeated power cycling.
Connector shape alone does not establish compatibility. Do not connect an unknown passive injector or increase power settings without checking the device specifications.
Test carefully
An authorized technician can compare a known-good compatible cable and port, changing one variable at a time. Testing an installed camera or access point may interrupt recording or coverage; arrange the test with the responsible owner.
If power is present but the device remains offline, inspect addressing, VLAN assignment, management connectivity, and adoption status. A factory reset should be a planned recovery step, not the first troubleshooting action.
