How to request a firewall rule or port change Print

A firewall change should enable a defined business connection. Requests such as open everything or disable the firewall leave the administrator without enough information to evaluate or safely implement the change.

Include the connection details

  • The business application and reason for the request.
  • The source device, user group, site, or network.
  • The destination hostname or approved address range.
  • The protocol and ports from the vendor's current documentation.
  • Whether traffic is outbound, inbound, or between internal networks.
  • The application owner, required duration, and testing contact.

Attach the vendor's relevant requirements rather than an unexplained list copied from a forum. Cloud service addresses can change; the supported implementation should account for that behavior.

Consider safer alternatives

Inbound exposure is different from an outbound connection. Remote access through an approved VPN or authenticated access service may meet the need without publishing a management interface. A port-forwarding rule should not be the default answer for cameras, desktops, or administration tools.

Implement and review

The administrator should record the approved scope, schedule, validation steps, and rollback. Temporary access needs an expiry date and an owner who confirms its removal. Test the intended application and check that unrelated access has not expanded.

If a request is denied, ask which requirement conflicts with policy and whether a supported alternative is available. Do not bypass the decision with a consumer router, tunnel, or unapproved remote-control service.

Get help with your network

For an existing service issue, open an AvrinTech support ticket. For an assessment or planned improvement, request a scoped proposal and review our networking services. Work, coverage, and response targets depend on your agreement.
