Separate cameras and connected devices from staff networks Print

Cameras and connected devices have different support needs from staff computers. Grouping them deliberately can simplify troubleshooting and reduce unnecessary communication with business systems.

Inventory the dependencies

Record device models, firmware, connection method, power source, recorder or controller, and vendor support contacts. Identify whether each device needs cloud access, internal recording, time synchronization, or approved remote maintenance. Do not assume all devices can be moved without affecting discovery or operation.

Design the required communication

  • Place devices in an appropriate network or VLAN.
  • Allow only the paths needed to their recorder, controller, or approved services.
  • Restrict management access to authorized administrators.
  • Define how staff view footage or use the system without broad network access.
  • Use a reviewed remote-access method instead of public management ports.

Discovery protocols and vendor-specific requirements may need narrow exceptions. Test those requirements rather than granting unrestricted access between networks.

Include physical and operational requirements

Confirm PoE compatibility and budget, cabling, recording capacity, and power continuity. Network separation does not compensate for weak device credentials, unsupported firmware, or an unprotected recorder.

Validate important functions

After changes, test live view, recording, playback, timestamps, authorized user access, and alerts where configured. Access-control systems may also involve building and life-safety requirements; involve the responsible qualified installer. Keep the network plan, access ownership, retention decisions, and maintenance schedule documented privately.

Get help with your network

For an existing service issue, open an AvrinTech support ticket. For an assessment or planned improvement, request a scoped proposal and review our networking services. Work, coverage, and response targets depend on your agreement.
