Network monitoring: what a business should actually monitor Print

Monitoring should answer whether the business can work and where an interruption begins. A dashboard full of green device icons may miss a failed application, broken DNS path, or user access problem.

Build checks around dependencies

Start with the applications the business cannot operate without. Identify their internet circuit, gateway, DNS, switching, wireless, power, and provider dependencies. Define checks that can distinguish a failed site from a failed service.

Useful checks may include device availability, interface errors, circuit health, resource use, backup outcomes, and appropriate application transactions. Collect enough context to interpret the result without unnecessarily capturing customer content or credentials.

Give every alert an owner

  • Identify who receives the alert and during which hours.
  • Define the business impact and escalation path.
  • Record what the first responder should check.
  • Schedule maintenance suppression without losing the event history.
  • Review repeated alerts and remove noise carefully.

An alert that reaches nobody is a report, not an operational response. Likewise, a monitoring service does not automatically include hands-on remediation or after-hours staffing.

Validate the monitoring itself

Use an approved test to confirm that a meaningful failure creates an alert and reaches the intended contact. Review changes to sites, equipment, and applications so checks remain relevant. Agree the monitoring and response scope in writing, including third-party dependencies and what happens when the monitoring platform itself is unavailable.
