Network configuration backups: prepare for equipment replacement Print

A network configuration backup helps recover settings after hardware failure or a mistaken change. It is different from a business-data backup: it does not automatically contain files, email, camera recordings, or other application data.

Define what is being protected

List gateways, switches, controllers, access points, and any vendor systems with separate configuration storage. Identify whether a controller backup covers the required devices or whether individual exports are also necessary. Record the software versions and supported restoration requirements.

Keep recovery usable

  • Save backups after important changes and on an agreed schedule.
  • Store a protected copy outside the equipment being backed up.
  • Limit access because configurations may contain sensitive network information or secrets.
  • Keep administrator access and recovery methods available through an approved process.
  • Identify the person authorized to restore the environment.

An export that cannot be located during an outage is not a practical recovery method. Dependence on the failed network for authentication or storage also needs a plan.

Test a restoration path

Where feasible, validate the backup using a supported test environment or spare device. Confirm compatibility before assuming a backup can be restored to different hardware. Document the physical steps, management access, and checks required after replacement.

Review recovery targets

Agree how long the business can operate without the network and what spare equipment is justified. Backups shorten configuration recovery, but they do not eliminate procurement, cabling, power, provider, or onsite installation delays.
